7 dashboard warning lights, and what red vs amber means
Check Engine: The Color Code
A steady amber check engine light could mean a loose fuel cap or sensor fault — check it soon. A flashing light signals a misfire that can overheat the catalytic converter; get it checked right away.
What you'd notice: No change in how the car drives, most of the time.
Oil Pressure Light
A red oil can icon means the engine has lost oil pressure, not just low oil. Stop when it's safe and shut the engine off — running it further risks serious internal damage.
What you'd notice: A knocking sound if oil has already run low.
Coolant Temperature Light
A red thermometer icon means coolant temperature is critically high. Pull over, shut the engine off, and let it cool — driving further can warp the cylinder head or blow a hose.
What you'd notice: Steam from under the hood, or a sweet smell.
Battery Charging Light
A red battery icon means the charging system has stopped charging — often a failed alternator or drive belt. The car runs on battery power alone, which runs out, so get help or stop safely.
What you'd notice: Dim headlights or slow power windows.
Brake System Light
A red circle with an exclamation mark could mean the parking brake is on, low brake fluid, or a leak in the brake lines. If it stays on after release, have a professional check it.
What you'd notice: The pedal feeling softer, lower, or needing a pump to work.
Tire Pressure Light
An amber tire icon means at least one tire is well below its recommended pressure. Check all four cold; if it stays on or flashes after adding air, have a professional check it.
What you'd notice: The car feeling softer, or pulling to one side on a straight road.
The ABS Light
An amber ABS light likely means the anti-lock system has switched itself off. Regular braking works, but wheels can lock and skid under hard braking. Because it involves the brakes, have a professional check it.
What you'd notice: No pulsing in the pedal if you brake hard on ice.
