One Part, Endless Bounce
Take away the damper and a spring alone never wants to stop moving. Push down on a corner of a car and let go — with nothing to slow it, the car would oscillate for several seconds before friction alone quieted it down.
What The Spring Actually Does
The springs carry the weight of the car's body and store the energy of every bump, releasing it back on the way up. How stiff a spring is — its spring rate — decides how much it compresses: a softer rate rides gently, a stiffer rate reacts faster.
What The Damper Actually Does
The damper carries almost none of that weight. A piston moving through hydraulic fluid forces it through narrow valved passages, and turning motion into heat is the entire job — that's what controls how fast the spring is allowed to move.
Two Directions, Two Jobs
A damper isn't tuned with one setting. Compression damping controls how fast the wheel is allowed to move up into a bump; rebound damping controls how fast the spring pushes it back down afterward. Race teams tune each separately.
Mismatch And The Bounce Comes Back
Spring rate decides how far the wheel travels over a bump; damper rate decides how quickly that travel stops. Pair a stiff spring with a soft damper and the car still bounces — just in smaller, quicker movements instead of one big one.
How Worn Dampers Fail
Seals wear, oil overheats past its rated range, or the valving fails outright — and once a damper can't resist motion, the spring takes over unchecked. The tire can bounce lightly or skip off the road after sharp bumps, with grip dropping right when the car needs it most.
Test It Yourself In Ten Seconds
Push down hard on one corner of the car and let go. A healthy damper lets it rise once and settle immediately — if that corner bounces twice or more before it stops, the damper isn't controlling the spring anymore. It's a rough check; a shop can test a damper properly.
